This Week in History: Election Projection

30 10 2008

As the 2008 Presidential Election draws to a close this week, polls are springing up everywhere about the likelihood of either John McCain or Barack Obama being elected. AOL news internet folly even goes beyond election predictions and asks readers which candidate’s name sounds better with “President” in front of it. In light of current projections for the winner, this week we look at several other “it’s in the bag” moments:

1984-Sore Winners Like Whoa- Sensing a huge victory, President Reagan asked Democrats to desert their roots and join his “Second American Revolution.” Vice President George Bush, in a fit of confidence about the upcoming results, congratulated Democratic nominee Walter Mondale for “hanging in there.”

1953-Predicting the Election of Common Sense- Prime Minister Churchill declares the danger of war has lessened because now the Russians, along with the rest of mankind, fear the annihilation an atomic conflict would bring.

1974-The Start of Something Good, I Just Know It- Long before the name Sarah Palin inspired hope and terror in respective hearts across America, the first Female Governor was elected in Connecticut. Ella Grasso cleared the way for beauty queen-huntresses everywhere to serve governorships across the U.S., and then-President Gerald Ford was quoted saying that this was “the start of an amazing age for women in America.”

Finally, the #1 single this week in 1971 was Cher’s “Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves.” Elections don’t have anything to do with any of those things…we hope… check out the song below and let us know for sure:

That’s it for this edition of This Week in History! Come back next Thursday for more interesting news from the past.

The Class Project. Classy

26 10 2008

The Program in Educational Theatre at New York University will present an
original interview theatre production, The Class Project, from October 24
through November 2 at the Black Box Theatre
, 82 Washington Square East.
Friday and Saturday performances begin at 8 p.m.; Sunday performances begin
at 3 p.m. Tickets are $10 general admission and $5 with valid NYU ID. The
public can call 212.998.5281 to make ticket reservations.

Inspired by the work of such playwrights as Anna Deavere Smith and Mois’s
Kaufman, The Class Project, explores current perceptions of class and
socioeconomic status among people living and working in New York City. A
group of nine researchers/actors, under the guidance of Educational Theatre
faculty member Joe Salvatore, interviewed a diverse range of subjects, from
academics, students, business owners, immigrants, public school teachers,
and more, on their understanding of how class affects their day-to-day
lives. The interviews were pieced together to create the performance script.

NYU’s production of The Class Project is directed by Salvatore, teacher of
educational theatre at the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and
Human Development. The cast features undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral
students from NYU Steinhardt’s Department of Music and Performing Arts
Professions.

This time, we didn’t pay for (our tickets to the Museum of) Sex.

25 10 2008
The only rules.

The only rules.

Today, seventeen Lafayette superstar residents embarqued on a unique mission. We lined up one by one on the subway unsure of what we would be seeing. We all knew it would be some sort of combination of movies. And robots. Oh, and animals. All tied together by sex. How was that going to work?

We learned, we laughed, and sometimes we scratched our heads. How could someone possibly bend that far? Hm, that was unique. Is that even possible?

And that was before we even got to the robots.

Robots. Having sex.

Robots. Having sex.

And what robots they were. Manipulated Barbie dolls stripped of everything, remolded with modeling putty and chromium paint. Having cold, emotionless sex. Quite the contrast from the other exhibits in the museum, where sex was portrayed as fun, an activity of love, and even an activity to maintain the continuance of a species. What a novel idea.

A special thanks to S.O.L.I.D. for co-sponsering the event. With their additional funding, I was able to use my own budget to purchase two new novels for my sexy library: The Other Hollywood: The Uncensored Oral History of the Porn Film Industry and The Big Bang. Both are available to be borrowed. Currently, you can check them out by e-mailing me when you would like to read them, how you’d pick them up, etc. In the future, I hope that these books will be added to one of the current projects that Lafayette is undertaking: The Lafayette Media Library.

Continue to keep your eyes out for other great Peer Education Programming. I will be tabling all next week, so don’t be afraid to stop and say hi; I need your input on what sort of Sexual Health programs YOU would like to see at Lafayette Residence Hall.

Cheers!

Ian
